​It seems barely credible that Novak has lost a match. This is particularly true when it's his earliest exit from an ATP Tour event for three years. Twice a champion in Monte Carlo, at least it's a short walk back to his home in the principality after this shock 6-4, 2-6, 6-4 defeat to the Czech Jiri Vesely, currently ranked at 55 on the ATP Tour rankings.

​Generously, as you'd expect, Djokovic paid tribute to him, calling him solid, brave, tactically good and aggressive. He concluded, after the vital third set break, that: 'He was going for it. He deserved to have it'. While his fans might not agree, these are the kind of results that add spice to the season, especially just ahead of the French.
