Summer Training (june thru august)

Please go to the Summer Training to learn more how off-season training will accelerate your game to the next level!
Summer training starts in June (Monday, 06/03/2019 - 08/16/2019) as a periodization part of a 12-week training cycle. This period of training is considered to be important as it sets up as preseason preparation for Fall (September) in-season training and competition.

The main goals for this period of training are physical and technical development of an athlete. From footwork movements to cardiovascular & muscular balance and endurance, an athlete will acquire the necessary skills to perform during a tournament match-situation. Depending on the needs, agility, balance, and coordination training will be implemented to improve overall athletic development foundation.

Also important at this time is the development of technical and tactical (decision-making process) skills, which will culminate in the overall strategic implementation during tournament competition. A tennis athlete will use this time to change, tweak, or add technical varieties to his/her tennis arsenals. Hacking into the how neuromuscular response to technical motor skills acquisition, block training and interleaved training at this time will be crucial for aspiring junior tennis athletes.

In other words, our summer tennis training will be intense work, but personal pride, enjoyment, and fun will be the by-product of this intense work.

Training Format & Structure

ACCELERATED TRAINING DAYS & TIME* (10 & Under)

There ARE no shortcuts!

The format and structure of our training will follow a 12-week intensive cycle of skills acquisition in forms and techniques for both the accelerated level (10U) and high-performance level. The training cycle culminates in May of the current year, which followed by Summer (preseason) Training (June-August). September thru May would then in-season training.

An intensive training program for juniors ages 10 and under, the Accelerated Training consists of approximately 50% technical, 20% tactical and strategies, 20% point and match play, and 10% physical.

Also following an intensive 12-week training cycle, and depending on the needs, juniors ages 10+ up in the high-performance level will employ 30% technical/tactical, 20% strategies/situations, 25% point/match play, and 25% fitness & conditioning.

From June through August, we'll have Summer Training as well. Think of this as preseason training to get you ready for in-season practice and tournaments.

We also offer private training sessions for individuals who would like to refine their game. The private training program is also suited for players who want to training full-time. Go to Private Training page for more details.

A 12-week intensive tennis training

Designed for juniors ages 7+ looking to rapidly acquire tennis skills and/or competitive juniors looking to ante up their game, the FITT model of training will be implemented. While developmental and High-performance training programs have different set of standard objectives, high-performance tennis sport-specific training should be governed by a more in-depth set of principles. However, the rigor and intensity of workload applies to both levels of training.

Training Format & Structure

The format and structure of our training will follow a 12-week intensive cycle of skills acquisition in forms and techniques for the accelerated group (10U). The Accelerated Training consists of approximately 50% technical, 20% tactical and strategies, 20% point and match play, and 10% physical. On the other hand, depending on the needs, the High-Performance training will employ 30% technical/tactical, 20% strategies/situations, 25% point/match play, and 25% fitness & conditioning.

We also offer private training sessions for individuals who would like to train one on one. Go to private training page for more details.

group ratio optimized for performance & training

The training program at HP Tennis Pro holds to the fact that training with an accountable partner or group with like mindset will accelerate and challenge each student to become a well-rounded player--on court and off. Our group will have a four (4) to one (1) ratio to foster attention and quality instruction. At no times should a group have more than six (6) students per coach.

The Fundamental framework of skill-building phases

Similar to other learning environment, our training program follows theory of motor learning and skills acquisition--technical, physical, mental--so that practices and drills are productive. One must first learn, practice, train, then compete!
Click on each tab to learn more about each phase.
  • Acquisition/Cognitive Phase
  • Corrective/Associative Phase
  • Stabilization/Autonomous Phase
  • Competition/Testing Phase
<
>
During this initial stage of tennis learning, the goal is to develop an overall understanding of the skill. The learner must determine what the objective of the skill is and begin to process environmental factors that will affect their ability to produce the skill.
Here, visual cues become less important and proprioceptive cues become very important. Proprioceptive cues refer to the learner focusing more on how their body is moving in space and what input is being felt from their joints and muscles. The more practice, the more proprioceptive input the learner receives to aide learning. Therefore, the more practice the better!
During this final stage of learning, the motor skill becomes mostly automatic. Progression to this level of learning allows the learner to perform the skill in any environment with very little cognitive involvement compared to the first stage. Keep in mind that the learning process can take different lengths of time for every individual and progression can be dependent on a variety of factors such as motivation of the learner, feedback received, environmental stimuli, organization of practice, and the presence of musculoskeletal or neuromuscular impairments.
The competitive phase can be several competitions, but they lead up to the main competition with specific tests. Within the main competition, a correction phase and a special stabilization phase may be included to emphasize performance goal.

Pure & Unspoiled

Both Arthur Ashe and Billie Jean King used these phrases ("playing out of one's mind," or "over one's head") to describe their performances while winning the finals at Wimbledon in 1975. . . . The player loses himself in the action, continually breaking the false limits placed on is potential. Awareness becomes acutely heightened, while analysis, anxiety and self-conscious thought are completely forgotten. Enjoyment is at a peak - pure and unspoiled.
